Whether it’s Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway or the straightaway stretch of steel tracks and banked turns, adventure comes in all shapes and forms. Combine your love of the open road and RV travel with the thrills of theme parks by checking into some of the country’s coolest campgrounds, which just happen to be located a shuttle hop away from roller coasters, family fun rides, musical shows and funnel cakes. You didn’t think we’d leave out the funnel cake, did you? It’s time to pack up that motorhome, Class A toy hauler or RUV and get those wheels rolling.
Kings Dominion’s Camp Wilderness – Doswell, Virginia
Located just off of I-95 and historic U.S. Route 1, Virginia’s Kings Dominion has been a favorite for more than 40 years. It features thrilling roller coasters like the Intimidator, Volcano and Dominator as well as shows, family-friendly rides and special events. Young campers will enjoy Snoopy and the gang at Planet Snoopy.
The park’s campground, Camp Wilderness, is situated right next door. It offers complimentary shuttle service to the park, so you can leave that Class A motorhome or Toy Hauler parked right where it is. Choose from back-in or pull-through sites with electric and sewer hook-up. Select sites have access to cable TV. Other amenities include a pool, horseshoes, volleyball court and a camp store. Traveling with an entourage of diesel RV drivers? No problem. Group rates are available. Camp Wilderness is also near the site of the birthplace of Secretariat and the State Fair of Virginia at Meadow Event Park.
Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground – Lake Buena Vista, Florida
Wooded trails, beautiful landscaping and activities such as archery and horseback riding give campers a sense of the great outdoors at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground. Sites can accommodate a Class C motorhome or 45-foot and longer RVs. Campsites have water, electricity hook-ups, cable TV, picnic tables and charcoal grills. Take the water shuttle right to the Magic Kingdom. There is also bus transportation to other parks and the dining, shopping and entertainment of Downtown Disney.
When you’re not busy exploring one of Disney’s four theme parks, there’s plenty of entertainment and dining options right on site. Amenities include a pool with water slide, special activities and entertainment such as the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner show, Mickey’s Backyard BBQ and a lounge at Crockett’s Tavern. Enjoy Disney’s Electrical Water Parade as it floats by after dark.
Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point – Sandusky, Ohio
The waterfront campground at Lighthouse Point is close to Cedar Point, Cedar Point Shore’s Water Park and Cedar Point’s Lake Erie beach. Back-in and pull-through sites are available for your gas RV. Sites have full hook-up with water, sewer, electricity, cable and complimentary Wi-Fi. Concrete pads ensure that motorhomes are level.
By staying at Lighthouse Point, guests can take advantage of early entry to the park to get first access to roller coasters like Millennium Force, Rougarou and GateKeeper. The whole group can enjoy thrill rides, shows, special events and family fun rides.
Anaheim RV Park near Disneyland – Anaheim, California
Anaheim RV Park is near Disneyland and California Adventure as well as Universal Studios Hollywood and Knott’s Berry Farm. Hop on a shuttle from the campground and spend the day discovering high-flying adventure, nostalgic memories and the magic of the movies. This is also a great home base from which to explore southern California beaches and attractions such as the Aquarium of the Pacific, Catalina Island, the Queen Mary and the Santa Monica Pier.
Campground amenities include a pool, hot tub, free Wi-Fi, cable television and laundry facilities. Spacious pull-through sites can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, and there are hook-ups for water, sewer and electricity. Relax and recharge in the café and clubhouse with large screen televisions, newspapers, a book exchange, coffee, a computer area and banquet tables.
