Here’s a vocab word for you: cheimatophobia. It’s the fear of all things cold and it’s part of what makes your ordinary Joes and Janes sprout their snowbird wings around this time every year. If you’re among cheimatophobic crew for whom the thought of frost causes serious dread, here are the Sunshine State spots we recommend for your winter migration.
Aztec RV Resort
Getting to know your neighbors is nice, but sometimes you just want to bask in 7,000 square feet of Florida sunshine all by yourself. Welcome toAztec Rv Resort, a class-A only campground where you’ll kick back in thatch-roofed gazebos on mega-spacious lots lined by tall hedges.
That’s not to say nobody’s friends here. Here, snowbirds shoot the breeze in heated pools and spas when they’re not high-stepping in country dance classes or to live music at the resort happy hour.
Just inland from Pompano Beach, you won’t need to travel far to make a splash in the Atlantic. Underwater adventurers will love scuba diving down to old shipwrecks and living coral reefs just the beach’s shore.
The Great Outdoors
The 15 mph speed limit at The Great Outdoors isn’t to induce road rage – it’s because you’ll be sharing the street with wild turkeys, sprightly deer, and the occasional slow-but-steady tortoise. It’s the go-to marsh campground for lovers of all creatures and it’s just outside Orlando.
If all the trail-walking, bird-watching and catch-and-release fishing leave you craving human connection, you’ll find plenty of it at weekly events that range from ice cream socials to golf cart parades. And just outside the campground, you can lay out on sandy stretches of Playalinda Beachlearn more about the final frontier at Kennedy Space Center.
Boyd’s Key West Campground
If you want to forget that snow even exists, this is the place to do it. The southernmost RV resort in the United States, Boyd's Key West Campground enjoys year-round warm weather that varies by only 12 degrees. Which is pretty fortunate considering campers here enjoy the sunrise each morning on oceanfront sites.
There’s a game room. There’s a heated pool. There’s a tiki hut with a mega TV. And there’s also fashion shows and movie nights, casino cruises and yoga classes. To put it simply: somethin’s always up at this tropical paradise of a campground.
And if you want to venture away from your RV oasis, you can wander over to Duval Street, a world-famous downtown where you can shop for tchotchkes in brightly colored shops or find that lost shaker of salt at Margaritaville Key West.
No matter where you’re headed in the Sunshine State, you’ll need the right RV to make the trip in. Thor Motor Coach offers the best of the best when it comes to your home-away-from-home.
